Surprisingly creative cocktail muffins make a perfect birthday party! Instead of icing, these juicy pear muffins are decorated with fruit cocktail sticks. Eating Aava’s Cocktail Muffins is as much fun as baking them!

Aava tells how she created this easy baking recipe: "I wanted to combine fruit and baking because I love ‘em both. These muffins are perfect for children’s birthday parties.”

Aava’s Cocktail Muffins

  • 2 eggs
  • 170 g sugar
  • 260 g plain flour
  • 1 tsp vanilla sugar
  • 1 tsp baking powder
  • 1 tsp cinnamon
  • 100 ml milk
  • 75 g butter
  • 70 g chocolate chips
  • 1 small pear
  • muffin tins (paper)
  • Cocktail sticks

  • fruit and berries (f. ex. watermelon, grapes, strawberries and pineapple)
  • wooden skewers
  1. Heat up the oven

Place the rack in the middle of the oven and heat up the oven to 200 °C, 180 °C for fan oven. Melt the butter in a pot or in the microwave and let it cool down.

  2. Beat eggs and sugar

Break eggs into a bowl. Add sugar and beat with electric mixer until semi-fluffy.

  3. Mix dry ingredients together

Add dry ingredients, milk and butter to egg-sugar mixture and beat with electric mixer until smooth. Add the chocolate chips and mix the dough with a big spoon.

  4. Divide the dough in the muffin tins

Place the muffin tins in the muffin tray. Using two spoons, divide the dough in the tins and leave 1 cm of rising space for each muffin. Depending on the size of your tins, you’ll have 8 to 12 muffins.

  5. Top with pear cubes

Peel the pear and chop it into small cubes. Top the muffins with pear cubes and press them gently.

  6. Muffins to the oven

Bake the muffins in the middle rack of the oven for about 20 minutes until lightly golden.

  7. Make fruit cocktail sticks

Meanwhile, cut your favourite fruit or berries into suitably sized chunks. You can also use small baking moulds. Thread the chunks onto 25 cm long wooden skewers. Make as many cocktail sticks as you’ve got muffins.

  8. Time to enjoy!

Let the muffins cool down a bit before pressing the cocktail sticks in the middle of them. Enjoy!

Tell us about this recipe? I love baking and fruits, so I combined them in this recipe. My fruit-topped muffins are great for children’s parties; I tested them on my sister’s birthday.

What is your favourite fruit or berry – and why? I love them all as they taste great and are versatile in cooking. Especially strawberries and huckleberries.

What vegetarian food you ate last and with whom? We made burgers with my fam, and mine was a veggie version. Super delicious!

The best thing in cooking? The aromas of cooking. I’m also fond of visual plating.

Who do you love to cook with? Always fun to cook with friends!

Whose kitchen you’d love to visit? Greta Thunberg’s since she protects our globe from climate change.

If you were asked to create a candy, what kind of candy would it be? A watermelon chocolate bar with melted marshmallows on top. Yum!

What music do you love to listen while cooking? Pop music and audiobooks.

The best colour in food? The more colours, the better!

When was the last time you screwed up in the kitchen? I forgot to add the flour in the pancake and didn’t notice this until I took it from the oven.
